Jalapeno Hummus Recipe

I had drinks at a friends house last night and she served some veggies as hummus as snacks. I couldn’t get over how delicious the hummus was, so asked where she had bought it, planning on picking some up over the weekend. I was beyond impressed when she told me that she had actually made them herself! The recipe seemed pretty straight forward, and since I stocked up on chickpeas the last time I did a Costco run, I decided to pick up some tahini and try making my own.

The basic recipe produces a delicious garlic, lemon flavoured hummus. I wanted a bit of a kick, so I blended in some jalapeno at the end but you don’t have to, the basic recipe is delicious on it’s own!

hummus ing

  • 1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (1 large lemon)
  • 1/4 cup well-stirred tahini
  • 3-4 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons (30 to 45 ml) water
  • 4-5 slices of pickled jalapeno, diced

  1. In the bowl of a food processor, combine the tahini and lemon juice and process for 1 minute, scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl then process for 30 seconds more. This extra time helps “whip” or “cream” the tahini, making the hummus smooth and creamy.
  2. Add the olive oil, minced garlic, cumin, and a 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the whipped tahini and lemon juice. Process for 30 seconds, scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl then process another 30 seconds or until well blended.
  3. Open, drain, and rinse the chickpeas. Add half of the chickpeas to the food processor and process for 1 minute. Scrape sides and bottom of the bowl, then add remaining chickpeas and process until thick and quite smooth; 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Add in the diced jalapenos and process in the food processor for 30 seconds. Scrape the sides of the bowl then process another 30 seconds until well blended.

**Most likely the hummus will be too thick or still have tiny bits of chickpea in it at this point. To fix this, with the food processor turned on, slowly add 2 to 3 tablespoons of water until you reach the perfect consistency.

Serve with veggies, pita or your favourite crackers.
