A little about self-care

A big part of living a healthy lifestyle is self-care. In order to reap all the benefits of healthy eating and working out, we need to take the time to care for ourselves. We can eat all the kale in the world, but if we’re tired, stressed and over worked (which many of us are) our bodies still won’t be at their healthiest.

Moving into the busiest time of year, let’s try and take the time for a little self care. Self care will be different for everyone, but the basic principal is that a self care activity is something that nurtures and refuels you at a deeper level. For me for example, it’s taking an hour to go to the gym or treating myself to lunch and watching the world go by. It may not sound like much, but I feel rejuvenated and happy after taking the time to be good to myself.

Since self care is different person to person, try a few of the tips below to put yourself first this holiday season, and really, all the time.

  1. Schedule time for activities that you value and that are important to you. Make a date that you have to commit to, and stick to it.
  2. Don’t feel guilty for taking time for yourself. A one hour manicure may be what you need to reset, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
  3. Empower the people around you, that rely on you, to care for themselves. You’re not abandoning them, you’re taking a bit of time for yourself.
  4. Start small! You don’t have to take a week off of work or escape to a yoga retreat to engage in self care. Treat yourself to a massage, go to the gym or even just have a coffee in peace before starting your day. These are all little steps but will make you feel better for having taken some time for yourself.
